Let the 1992 Ecolympics begin!

Be an energy-miser and participate in the 1992 University of Delaware
Ecolympics. The competition will officially begin at 1 p.m., Friday March 20,
on the steps of Memorial Hall, and awards will be given in May to the
residence hall demonstrating gold-medal energy saving and recycling talents.
Last year the University spent approximately $2.3 million on housing
utilities, and the Ecolympics have been designed to encourage students to
conserve energy in residence halls and to remind the University
community-at-large, of the need to conserve and recycle.
Ecolympics were held at Harvard University in 1990 and were very
successful, according to Craig Zylka, recycling chairperson of the Student
Environmental Action Coalition (SEAC). Members of SEAC proposed Ecolympics
for Delaware and have been working with Tom Vacha, director of Plant
Operations, and with housing and residence life staff in preparing for the
competition. Special meters have been installed in residence halls to measure
water, heat and electricity usage, and recycling efforts will continue to be
monitored.
The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) also is a
sponsor of Ecolympics, helping to publicize it through posters and mailings.
Some of the Ecolympic events are
     * Short shower syndrome
     * Rub-a-dub-dub, fill the washer tub
     * Clothes drying a la racque
     * Speedy switch-off to conserve electricity
     * Lug-a-mug for all your beverages
     * Taps-off for shaving and brushing teeth
     * Can and bottle toss into recycling bins
     * Fill-the-fridge with little space to spare
     * Window-slam and unhindered heaters for fuel conservation
     * Hotline calls to 831-1500 to report leaky faucets and glitches.
Let the games begin and go for the gold in conservation and recycling!
