Marine research professor to edit new international journal
Gerard J. Mangone, University research professor in the
College of Marine Studies, has been appointed editor-in-chief for
North America of The International Journal of Marine and Coastal
Law, a new quarterly published by Graham & Trotman/Martinus Nijhoff
Publishers of London.
The new journal combines Marine Policy Reports, founded and
edited by Mangone for more than 10 years and the International
Journal of Estuarine and Coastal Law, edited by David Freestone of
the University of Hull in Great Britain.
In making the announcement, the publisher called Mangone "a
renowned scholar of marine affairs," and noted that he has taught
courses or seminars in international and maritime law at 14
universities, both in the United States and overseas and has been
a consultant to the White House, the United Nations and other
agencies."
Last month, Mangone met with Freestone in London to plan the
new journal and to organize an international editorial board from
all parts of the world. The journal will start accepting articles
in the near future, with the first issue scheduled to appear next
January.
The journal will cover marine and coastal law, laws governing
the high seas, naval affairs, the merchant marine, ports,
fisheries, marine mining of minerals, environment, transportation
and trade, Mangone said.
"I am excited about this opportunity," Mangone said. "By
combining the two journals, the new publication will reach a
broader readership and its influence will be widespread and
contribute to the College of Marine Studies' reputation in coastal
and ocean management."
Mangone also directs a joint diploma program in shipping and
port management between the University and the Port of Singapore.
Now in its third year in Singapore, the intensive five-week program
is known worldwide and draws students in middle management from
such diverse countries as China, Poland and Kuwait, Mangone said.
In Delaware, Mangone chaired the Port of Wilmington Maritime
Society and continues to serve on its executive board.
