Southern programs grow as new higher ed facility opens

Higher education opportunities in Sussex County will take
another leap forward with the expansion of University of Delaware
programs coinciding with the opening of the new Higher Education
Building in Georgetown. Two more bachelor's degrees will be added
to the University's three baccalaureate degrees already available
in Sussex County and the associate degrees from the University
Parallel Program.
The five programs leading to bachelor's degrees offered in
Georgetown and designed primarily for those transferring from
technology programs at Delaware Technical and Community College
include
          * bachelor of science degrees in engineering
               technology and general agriculture;
          * the recently added bachelor of science in nursing
for the registered nurse, a degree program presented
on videotape to accommodate the flexible working
               hours of registered nurses;
          * the bachelor of arts degree in criminal justice; and
          * the newly available bachelor of arts in liberal
                studies (BALS).
These degrees may be of special interest to adults who already
have earned some college credits and wish to complete their
bachelor's degrees through part-time study, as well as to full-time
students.
University of Delaware graduate degrees available in
Georgetown will include the master of education, with special
concentration options in educational leadership, adult/continuing
education and vocational education, and the master of instruction
(M.I.) degree, a nationally recognized graduate program designed to
meet the needs of classroom teachers.
Twenty-three southern Delaware students already have been
admitted to the University's master of arts in liberal studies
(MALS) program, designed for adults who want to focus their search
for personal enrichment. The program stresses the connections
between fields of knowledge and encourages a multidisciplinary
approach to learning.
In September, Sussex countians will be able to take courses
leading to the master's degree in public administration (MPA),
which prepares men and women for career positions in public
management, much as the MBA does for those aiming for a career in
business. The curriculum focuses on skills in planning,
decisionmaking and human resource management.
The University plans to offer as many as 60 credit courses
each semester and anticipates enrolling more than 600 students in
Sussex County.
University offices at 12 The Circle, Georgetown, have been
moved to the new Higher Education Building. Many University
faculty, staff and academic advisers are now located in the new
building, providing comprehensive student services, advisement and
registration.
