Southern Delaware is focus of new assistant director
F Gary Simpson, general manager of the Delaware State Fair
and Harrington Raceway since 1985, has been named assistant
director of University relations at the University of Delaware,
effective April 1.
"Gary Simpson will make a valuable addition to the
University's programs and initiatives in Southern Delaware. He is
a well-respected member of the local community and has worked with
individuals in many areas throughout the state," Robert R. Davis,
director of University relations, said.
In his new position, Simpson will work to increase the
visibility of the University in Southern Delaware by initiating and
developing programs and events in response to the needs of the
community.
He also will manage two University administrative offices: one
at 4 the Green in Dover and the other at the Higher Education
Building in Georgetown.
Simpson replaces Kay Lewis, who resigned to return to work in
the education field.
A graduate of Milford High School, Simpson earned two degrees
at the University: a bachelor's degree in animal science and a
master's degree in agricultural economics.
He has been affiliated with the Delaware State Fair since
1974, serving as assistant manager until 1985.
During this time he also has been affiliated with Harrington
Raceway, serving as special events coordinator from 1975 to 1985
and as director of advertising and public relations from 1977 to
1985.
A commissioned officer in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps,
Simpson is a board member and member of the executive committee of
the Milford Memorial Hospital, and board member and president of
the Delaware 4-H Foundation. He also serves as girls softball
manager for the Milford Little League.
Simpson, his wife and three children live in Milford.
