Search committee appointed for engineering dean position
A search committee has been appointed to seek a new dean for
the University of Delaware College of Engineering, Provost R. Byron
Pipes has announced.
Costel D. Denson, professor of chemical engineering, was named
acting dean of the college when Pipes, who had served as dean from
1985, was appointed last May as University provost and vice
president for academic affairs.
The dean is responsible for the academic and administrative
leadership of the college, which has four departments-chemical
engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering and
mechanical engineering, as well as Air Force ROTC, the Center for
Composite Materials, Center for Catalytic Science and Technology,
Center for Applied Coastal Research, Delaware Transportation
Center, Orthopedics and Biomechanical Engineering Center and an
interdepartmental Materials Science Program.
There are 73 faculty members in the College of Engineering,
with a graduate student population of 364 and an undergraduate
student body numbering 977. Major research efforts are active
throughout the college, with funding at about $10.7 million in
1990-91.
Kenneth R. Biederman, dean of the College of Business and
Economics, chairs the search committee. Closing date for
applications is March 16.
Members of the engineering dean search committee are Roberta
Colman, chemistry and biochemistry; Robert G. Hunsperger,
electrical engineering; Nobuhisa Kobayashi, civil engineering;
Michael Santare, mechanical engineering; Andrew L. Zydney, chemical
engineering; and Ronald F. Whittington, acting director of the RISE
(Resources to Insure Successful Engineers) Program in the college.
