Handling Difficult Customers
     This class will cover tips for dealing with difficult people,
delivering "bad" news and negotiating effective agreements. A goal
setting for personal improvement will conclude the program.

Introduction to Supervision
     This NEW program is designed for supervisors with less than
one year of experience and those preparing to move into a
supervising position within six months. We will examine how the
supervisory role differs from a non-supervisory position, the
effects of personal power vs. positional power, the importance of
self development and networking activities to growth as a
supervisor.

Performance Appraisal for New Employees
     These training sessions are designed to introduce new
professionals and salaried staff to the University's performance
appraisal system. In order for the performance appraisal to be
effective, employees need to be aware of their critical role in the
evaluation process: identifying and prioritizing their major job
duties. They should also become familiar with the supervisor's
obligations and responsibilities as enumerated in the University's
Performance Appraisal Policy.

Defensive Driving National Safety Council Course
     This is an eight-hour presentation of the National Safety
Council's Driver Improvement Program. Topics include
crash-avoidance techniques, rules of the road and safe driving
practices. What can the DDC do for me? (1) three-point credit added
to your driving record by satisfactorily completing the eight-hour
course; (2)Insurance discount of 10 percent each year for three
years on motor vehicle liability insurance premium upon completion
of the course. (Both are applicable in Delaware only.)Topics will
include various crash-avoidance techniques based on the standard
accident prevention formula of professional drivers.
     Note: There is a fee of $25 per person for this class. Please
send check, made out to Delaware Safety Council, Employee
Development, Academy Building. No telephone registration will be
taken for this workshop. Registration must be made by mail and
accompanied by a check.

Developing Leader Competencies
     This program is targeted for supervisors and managers with
several years of management experience. It is an advanced level
program in which participants examine the role of self development,
follower attributes and the group behavior in the context of
leadership development. In addition, participants complete a self
assessment and elicit anonymous feedback from subordinates ranking
the frequency with which they practice five leader competencies.

Primer on Affirmative Action for Supervisors
     Review of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) laws and judicial
actions related to age discrimination, sexual harassment, Americans
with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act. The roles of
federal and state agencies in enforcing EEO law will be discussed.
Participants will examine the major elements of an affirmative
action plan and explore the application of affirmative action in
hiring. The course is designed for supervisors, managers and others
involved in carrying out personnel actions.

Supervisor's Orientation to U.D. Personnel Policies and Procedures
     Particularly beneficial for new supervisors of professional
and salaried staff, this workshop presents an overview of the
contents of the Personnel Policies and Procedures Handbook and the
function of the Employee Relations Office.

Organization of the University of Delaware
     Career development at the University of Delaware requires
extensive knowledge of how the various units within the University
fit together. Learn what different departments do, how they relate
to one another and what are their academic and administrative
reporting lines.

Introduction to University Forms and Recordkeeping
     This new training program is designed for salaried staff who
work with common University forms. Through completion of various
in-class exercises, participants will create a reference manual for
their professional use. Competency in administrating University
forms is listed as a job responsibility in the salaried staff
career matrix.

Management Comminications: Listening
     Research on management development indicates that being an
effective communicator is one of the most important skills for a
successful management career. Listening is a critical communication
skill for all people, especially managers. This NEW supervisory
program teaches how to listen for understanding and to ensure that
the message sent and received are the same. Evaluating non-verbal
signals and the proper use of questioning techniques will also be
covered. Special emphasis will be placed on participant listening
skills using case studies drawn from participant experience. It is
recommended that this program be taken in conjunction with Coaching
for Performance Improvement, May 12.
