Dean appointed ECS commissioner
Frank B.Murray, H Rodney Sharp Professor of Educational
Studies and Psychology and dean of the College of Education, has
been appointed by Gov. Michael N. Castle a Delaware commissioner to
the Education Commission of the States (ECS), a prestigious and
influential group of governors, educators, legislators and other
citizens involved in education. Each state has seven commissioners.
The commission, created in 1965, plays an influential role in
reforming and improving education nationwide, Murray said.
Headquartered in Denver, ECS holds a summer conference each year
that is attended by national and state policy-makers in education.
ECS, in conjunction with the University and the governors of
the seven RE:Learning states (a partnership between the Coalition
of Essential Schools, founded by educational leader Ted Sizer, now
of Brown University, and ECS), is a sponsor of the National
Principals Leadership Academy to be held this summer at the
University of Delaware. A new, innovative program for school
principals from across the country who have demonstrated leadership
qualities, the academy has received funding from the Education Fund
for Innovation in Education, U.S. Department of Education.
ECS has several outreach and network programs, including
Advanced Legislative Program Services in education (ALPS) and State
Education Policy Seminars (SEPS).
Murray has been the Delaware SEPS coordinator for 10 years and
has organized meetings of education leaders in the state.
