March 6 is deadline for advanced study applications

Provost R. Byron Pipes has announced the continuation of the
University's Center for Advanced Study in a format that will
preserve the essence of the program while reducing its cost to the
University. Three full professors will receive fellowships each
year, two for research and the third for either teaching or
research.
Teaching fellowships are intended to permit senior faculty to
dedicate themselves for a specified period- usually one semester-to
making improvements in the methods and quality of teaching.
Fellows are expected to conduct demonstration classes and
seminars, hold public lectures, counsel other faculty and engage in
related activities that will enhance teaching effectiveness.
Applications will be judged for their potential impact on the
quality of instruction at the University.
Research fellowships are available to senior faculty with
outstanding scholarly credentials whose research requires their
concentrated attention for one year, or where a special advantage
to the University, state or region is demonstrable. Applications
will be judged for conceptual clarity and for the quality of the
proposed research.
Fellows will receive their academic year salaries and benefits
and will be relieved of all regular obligations except the
supervision of graduate theses and dissertations. Time spent as a
fellow in the Center for Advanced Study will apply toward the next
earned sabbatical.
The fellowship program will be administered by the Chairs'
Caucus. An advisory committee, composed of five former fellows
representing diverse disciplines, will make recommendations to the
caucus, and these will be carried to the provost who will make
final selections.
Each application is limited to 1,000 words. It should be
accompanied by a letter of endorsement from the applicant's
chairperson and six copies should be submitted to: Thomas R. Scott,
Convener, Chairs' Caucus, Department of Psychology, Wolf Hall.
The deadline for receipt of applications has been extended to
March 6. Awards will be announced by the provost on March 27.
