Safety corner; Training important first step

With the start of the new semester, faculty, staff and
students should remember their rights and responsibilities under
Delaware's Hazardous Chemical Information Act and under University
policy #7-27. The purpose of the act and policy is to protect
individuals from the hazards associated with the use of chemicals.
All University operations, including classroom activities
involving the use of hazardous chemicals, are subject to this
regulation.
Training must be conducted before faculty, staff and students
use hazardous materials. Training sessions should include a
discussion of the subjects listed on the Hazardous Chemical
Training Certification form.
Training documentation is required to be completed by the
individuals giving and receiving training. All original training
forms shall be sent to the Department of Occupational Health and
Safety upon completion. Current copies of training certifications
should be kept in the departments for one year.
Hazardous materials manuals are available from the Department
of Occupational Health and Safety to aid in training.
Persons are encouraged to return unwanted, undamaged books to
their instructor/supervisor for reuse to conserve resources and
reduce costs.
The Department of Occupational Health and Safety will conduct
training sessions for supervisors upon request and is available for
consultation on the requirements under the act. Questions
concerning the act or University policy #7-27 should be directed to
the Department of Occupational Health and Safety at 831-8475.
