Diversity a campus asset
The beginning of the University of Delaware's fall semester,
with the return of a large, diverse body of students to the Newark
campus, provides a unique opportunity for the students, faculty and
administration to recommit themselves to the ideals of our
institution.
The best education can only take place in an atmosphere of
mutual trust and admiration, and the University is determined to do
more than adhere to the letter of the law by prohibiting
discrimination on the basis of age, color, creed, gender, handicap,
national origin, race, religion, sexual preference or veteran
status; the spirit of the academic community requires that we learn
together to value the diversity within our University of Delaware
community.
A true appreciation of the richness of the University that
stems from the variety of individuals and groups can be neither
legislated, implemented by organizations like The Women's Studies
Program and The Commission to Promote Racial and Cultural
Diversity, nor can it be instituted solely by campus groups such as
the Black Student Union, the Chinese Student Association, the
Indian Students Association, the Jewish Student Union, the Lesbian
Gay BiSexual Student Union, the Middle East Awareness Committee,
the University's chapter of the NAACP, the Organization for the
Advancement of Latin Americans or the Returning Adult Student
Association.
The many relevant courses offered by our faculty are a
reflection of the variety of directions in which we are led by an
appreciation for the diversity of our world and our community. Of
course, the real test of our willingness to learn comes not in the
classroom, but in the form of dozens of opportunities we have each
day to be open to new ideas, people and situations.
I ask you to join in the University's commitment to have our
campus be a place where difference, instead of being a source of
fear and mistrust, is a source of education, enlightenment and
friendship.
