Working to ensure health and safety

This column, the first from the Department of Occupational
Health and Safety, will appear in UpDate to communicate information
of importance to the University community. If you have suggestions
for future columns, please contact the department at 451-8475.

The Department of Occupational Health and Safety, under the
direction of the vice president for government and public
relations, works to ensure a safe and healthful work environment
for the University community. Assisting with this is the Risk
Management Council, the vehicle used for implementation of
University safety policies. To date, there are approximately 30
safety policies addressing various concerns and these can be found
in the recently updated University of Delaware Policies and
Procedures Manual, available in departmental offices and on
computer by accessing UDInfo.
The Department of Occupational Health and Safety employs 10
individuals to oversee approximately 50 programs, including
asbestos management, CPR and first aid programs, respiratory
protection, high-risk testing, radiation safety and hazardous waste
management. Six professional staff and four salaried staff members
cover five areas of responsibility: Environmental Health,
Industrial Hygiene, Radiation Safety, Industrial Safety/Loss
Control and Fire Prevention. The Department of Occupational Health
and Safety provides free consultations to University departments
and is often contacted by members of the surrounding community for
advice and information.
The Department of Occupational Health and Safety responds to
emergency situations upon request by Public Safety or members of
the University community.
The department can be contacted directly on 451-8475 between
8 a.m. and 5 p.m. or reached through University Police, telephone
451-2222. Department of Occupational Health and Safety staff
members will respond to incidents 24 hours a day and can be reached
on evenings and weekends through the University Police.
The department is located in the Institute of Energy
Conversion building off Wyoming Road, and most members are
