Awards for women available

     The Office of Women's Affairs and the Commission on the Status
of Women are sponsoring several awards for University students who
have excelled in the area of women's studies and have enhanced the
life and status of women at the University.
     Donna Tuites, program coordinator in the Office of Women's
Affairs, said that the research and travel awards are important for
those doing research in the area of women's studies.
     "We want to promote research in areas of women's issues," she
said, "and to give recognition to people who have improved the
status of women on campus."
     The Student Travel Awards and Special Travel Awards are
designed to support members of the University community who are
presenting scholarly papers and participating in panel discussions
at professional conferences concerning women's issues. The Student
Travel Award supports the efforts of graduate and undergraduate
students. The maximum award is $100. The Special Travel Award is
open to all faculty and professionals. A maximum of $200 will be
awarded.
     Departmental matching of the funds is required, and the
application deadline for both awards is March 16.
     The E. Arthur Trabant Institutional Award for Women's Equity
is given to any individual, department, administrative unit or
committee that has achieved greater equity for women at the
University. Contributions that are honored include developing
exemplary programs or curricula, implementing innovative policies
and procedures related to women's equity and enhancing existing
services to women at the University. The deadline for nominations
is April 6.
     The Student Research on Women Conference is open to students
who have completed research on women or gender issues. Proposal
abstracts should be submitted to the department of Women's Studies
Programs in 333 Smith Hall by 4:30 p.m., March 9. Papers are due
Monday, April 6. The writer of the winning paper in both the
graduate and undergraduate divisions receives a President's Award
of $150.
     The Bessie B. Collins and Mae Carter Awards praise the
achievements of returning adult women students. The Bessie Collins
Award of $200 is given to a woman student who is committed to
academic excellence and has contributed to the University and
greater communities. An applicant must be at least 25 years old, a
matriculated junior and have a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0. The Mae
Carter Award of $250 is given to a graduate or undergraduate
student who has participated in the University's services for women
and is committed to scholarship. A minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 is
required. The deadline for applications for these awards is March
9.
