Senate approves 5 new majors
The University Faculty Senate approved five new majors at its
Monday meeting, but rejected a sixth.
A new major in environmental soil science within the
Department of Plant and Soil Sciences and management, finance,
marketing and operations management majors within the College of
Business and Economics were approved provisionally for four years.
Questions were raised about a proposed new major in Latin
American studies with senators asking why so few senior-level
courses were offered and how frequently certain courses in the
multi-departmental major would be offered. The resolution was
returned to the Committee on Undergraduate Studies.
In other business, the senate approved new honors
baccalaureate degrees for three programs within the Department of
Individual and Family Studies. The degrees are effective
immediately in family and community services, human development and
family processes, and early childhood development and education.
Senators also voted to invite a representative from the
Professional Advisory Council to participate as a non-voting member
of the Faculty Senate, beginning in September. A proposal to
disestablish the interior design major as of December 1995 was
passed after senators were assured that the phase-out of courses
would allow all majors currently enrolled to complete their
degrees.
The senate also rejected a resolution that called for a
majority of credits for a minor to be taken "outside the primary
subject area courses used to fulfill the requirements of the
major."
