Original play scheduled in Bacchus this month

The Bacchus Players will present Tales of the Turnpike at 8:15
p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, Feb. 14-15 and 21-22, in the Bacchus
Cabaret Theatre, on the lower floor of the Perkins Student Center.
The original play, loosely based on The Canterbury Tales, is a
collaborative effort of Joyce Hill Stoner, chairperson of art
conservation, and Scott F. Mason, assistant director of the Perkins
Student Center.
They describe the play as a light-hearted, musical parable about
motley theatrical types aboard a bus en route to New York City. Some
characters are based on the pilgrims in The Canterbury Tales, and some
are based on the characters within Tales.
Tickets are $5 for students and senior citizens and $8 for the
general public. For information, call 831-2428.
Stoner, who directed and wrote the music and lyrics for the
successful off-Broadway revue I'll Die If I Can't Live Forever, has
written, co-written and/or directed 12 other productions for the Bacchus
Players in the last five years.
Mason has written six murder mysteries or comedies that have been
produced by the Bacchus Players or E-52 Student Theatre and has directed
for both groups and the Chapel Street Players.
Together they collaborated last year on The First Reprise, a
somewhat controversial revision of the Robin Hood legend.
The cast of 13 includes veteran Delaware actors Andy Zimmerman and
Marlene Hummel, who will appear, respectively, as Harry Bailey, the bus
driver, and as Hannah (based on the Wife of Bath).
Seven University students or recent graduates portray aspiring
actors or musicians. Todd B. Chappelle is serving in a dual role as an
actor and musical director/accompanist for the show.
Others in the cast include Martina Haw, Michael Cartwright and
Richard J. Cohen, who have been featured at the Three Little Bakers
Dinner Theatre.
