MBNA giving total nears $1 million with new gifts

MBNA America has pledged $525,000 to the University of Delaware in
support of two special projects, President David P. Roselle announced at
a media conference Jan. 29 on the Newark campus.
A gift of $200,000 to the College of Business and Economics will
establish the MBNA America Business Professorship, with the endowment
fund used to recognize and reward outstanding teaching in the
University's second largest college.
An additional gift of $325,000 will fund the MBNA America Concourse
in the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center, which is now under
construction at the south end of Delaware Stadium, east of South College
Avenue.
In making the announcement, Roselle praised MBNA's "generous
support" of the University.
"Since 1982, when MBNA moved to Delaware, that giving has totaled
nearly $1 million in support of a variety of activities," Roselle said,
calling MBNA one of Delaware's "outstanding corporate citizens.
"According to MBNA Chairman and CEO Charles M. Cawley, "The
quality of the faculty and students at the University of Delaware was a
key component in MBNA's decision to move to Delaware.
"Over the past 10 years, our respect for the University of Delaware
and its importance to the success of MBNA has grown," Cawley said.
"Currently, more than 1,500 of the people of MBNA America are either
University of Delaware graduates or are presently attending the
University."
Cawley said the "educational preparation, character and strong work
ethic of University of Delaware students and graduates have been
instrumental in MBNA America's dynamic growth from 150 people serving
150,000 customers to today's 6,000 people serving more than 8 million
customers worldwide.
"As MBNA America looks to the future, we expect sustained growth
and a continued emphasis on peerless customer service. The University
of Delaware is a long-term partner as we continue that never-ending
journey to excellent customer service," Cawley said.
"We appreciate what the University of Delaware does for MBNA and
for the state of Delaware. To be successful in business today you have
to be good at what you do.... The University of Delaware is something
special," Cawley said. "David says we've given a million dollars to the
University over the last 10 years. We should have given more. That's not
enough. The University of Delaware is something very, very, very special
to us and should be to everybody else.
"We have 900 graduates of the University of Delaware and about 600
students who work at our company," he said. "Those 900 people come to
us well prepared in every important way. Most significantly, those 900
people come to us with the right attitude about work, with the right
attitude about what they do."
In the fall of 1990, a University "branch campus" was established
on-site at MBNA in Newark. The University On-Site Education Center was
among the first of its kind in a corporate environment in the United
States.
Under the arrangement, a complete array of courses and services are
available, on-site, to the people of MBNA and their families. Without
leaving MBNA, individuals may register for courses, obtain academic
advisement and counseling and get program information.
MBNA America is a leading nationwide issuer, marketer and servicer
of bank credit cards.
