Campus offices give to local area charity
The Newark Area Welfare Committee received some holiday cheer
and support from several University offices in the form of funds
and food. The Office of Government and Public Relations, the Office
of the Treasurer and the Bartol Research Institute contributed more
than $900, while others on campus collected food.
According to Jane Groo, who heads the committee's food pantry
located at the Newark United Methodist Church, the organization is
more than 50 years old, starting out as the Mayor's Welfare
Committee. Now chaired by Duane Hix, pastor of the Christiana
Presbyterian Church, the committee helps the less fortunate with
food and, occasionally, provides funds for rent, fuel and
electricity in cases of emergency. Baskets of food also are
distributed during the holidays.
During the year, the committee has one direct mail campaign
and one collection campaign at local banks and stores.
Anyone wishing further information about the committee may
write to the Newark Area Welfare Committee, P.O. Box 951, Newark,
