Delaware figure skaters aiming for the nationals

     University of Delaware ice skaters have been skating away with
awards from competitions all over the country. The University of
Delaware Figure Skating Club includes both students and
non-students, under the supervision of Ron Ludington, director of
the Ice Skating Science Development Center.
     Two Delaware skaters, Mark Naylor, a University senior, and
his partner, Elaine Asanakis, have qualified for the 1992 Olympics
in the pairs division. They will represent Greece as Asanakis is a
Greek citizen. She also will compete in the ladies single division.
     Skaters compete first in regional competitions, followed by
sectional competitions, then the national competition. Olympic
participants will be selected from the national competition. Those
skaters who previously have done well in national or in
international competitions are not required to compete in regionals
and sectionals and are given byes and compete in the nationals.
     The nationals will be held Jan. 4-12 in Orlando, Fla.
     For the second year, juvenile and intermediate skaters will
compete in a new competition known as mini-nationals.
     Following is an overview of skating competitions in which
University of Delaware skaters have placed.

In the Mid-Atlantic regional competion held in Sept. 26-29 in New
York City, these skaters placed:

In the New England regional competition, held Nov. 4-9 in
Smithfield, R.I., Jordan Gawinski and Garrett Brockert placed first
in the novice dance category.

The University team also competed in the 1991 Challenge Cup
competition held Oct. 17-20 in Philadelphia. A total of 46 skaters
participated, winning 21 medals. The following skaters placed:

In the Skate America competition held Sept. 16-22 in Oakland,
Calif., Calla Urbanski and Rocky Marval won first place in senior
pairs.

In the 1991 Sports Festival, held July 12-21 in Los Angeles,
Elizabeth McLean and Ron Kravette took third place in senior dance,
and Calla Urbanski and Rocky Marval took second place in senior
pairs.

In international competition, Calla Urbanski and Rocky Marval
placed fourth in pairs at the Trophee Lalique competition, held
Nov. 8-11 in Albertville, France.

In the Eastern sectionals, held Dec. 3-7, in Bridgeport, Conn., the
following skaters qualified for the nationals:

In the Pacific regionals, held Dec. 10-14, in Tacoma, Wash., Rachel
Lane and Tony Darnell placed first in junior dance.

Those skaters qualifying for the Mini-Nationals are Sara Tiker,
Christy Moxely and Tom Gaasback, Kristina Pervi, Jennifer Yadvish
and Sean Tilley.
