Visitors' parking areas to be free to students in evenings
Effective Monday, Nov. 25, beginning at 6 p.m., the visitors'
lots on South College Avenue, across from Morris Library, and on
Academy Street, next to Penny Hall, will be available for parking
for a reduced charge of 50 cents per night.
Previously, the regular fee of $1 per hour was charged until
10:30 p.m. at the visitors' lots, which have attendants on duty.
According to Douglas Tuttle, director of public safety, the
lots, both of which are near the central campus core, can be used
at the reduced fee by students taking evening classes, by employees
and by University guests.
"This move provides more convenient and safer parking at night
for members of the campus community," Tuttle said.
The lots will continue to have attendants on duty until 10:30
p.m., weekdays, to provide additional security for the areas, he
said.
The parking fee of 50 cents must be in exact change-two
quarters-after 10:30 p.m. and on weekends, he said, to activate the
gates at these lots. Fees are charged to park in the visitors' lots
since their construction is financed by user fees, Tuttle
explained.
Tuttle also said that individuals with valid University
parking permits are able to park evenings at no charge in the
conveniently located, gated lots on Amstel Avenue, off Hullihen
Hall Circle and south of the Morris Library.
