Employees recognized for diversity

     More than 100 University employees, students and organizations
were recognized Nov. 5 at the first Diversity Recognition Ceremony.
     "It is very important for individuals to learn that they are
appreciated for all the work they do in promoting racial and
cultural diversity. This is a first step in which the University
will show its appreciation for everyone's efforts," Judith Gibson,
assistant vice president for affirmative action and multicultural
programs, and one of the program organizers, said.
     Honorees received a certificate and a mug bearing the
Diversity logo.
     Assisting Gibson in the presentation of awards were R. Byron
Pipes, University provost and vice president for academic affairs;
James Newton, director of Black American Studies and chairperson of
the Commission to Promote Racial and Cultural Diversity; and task
force chairs Cynthia Cummings, associate director of housing and
residence life, and Norma Gaines, assistant dean of the College of
Human Resources.
