U.D., Newark Police pooling efforts to raise awareness
University of Delaware Public Safety and Newark Police are
pooling their resources to offer stepped-up crime prevention
programs for students-both on and off the campus-in light of this
semester's four alleged sexual assaults involving University women
in city areas near the campus.
"Student safety and security is the driving force behind this
cooperative effort, which we hope will be an effective way to reach
women students with important information on how to protect
themselves," according to Lawrence Thornton, associate director of
Public Safety.
"Personal awareness is one of the most effective deterrents to
crime," he explained.
"We will be stepping up ongoing programs conducted in the
residence halls by Public Safety and in the Newark community,
particularly at apartment complexes, by Newark Police," Thornton
said. "An effective crime prevention program requires the
cooperation of the entire community, and information sharing is a
key ingredient to that effectiveness."
Other activities, such as a Campus Watch program and an
expanded escort system, also are under active discussion, Thornton
said.
