New York YMCA director to speak at Commencement
Paula L. Gavin, president of YMCA of Greater New York and a
1967 graduate of the University, will be the speaker for the 1992
Winter Commencement.
The ceremony for students completing degree requirements in
August and December will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 4, in
the Delaware Field House.
"Traditionally, the Winter Commencement address is delivered
by a distinguished graduate of the University," Robert R. Davis,
director of University relations, said. "The selection is drawn
from nominations by the Office of Alumni Relations."
In February 1990, Gavin became president of the YMCA of
Greater New York, the largest in a worldwide network of YMCAs. As
president, she is responsible for providing leadership to 36
branches and operating units in New York City, including three
camps and a conference center upstate, which collectively serve
more than 200,000 individuals each year.
Before joining the YMCA, Gavin was an officer at AT&T, where
she began as supervisor of operators in 1967. During her career at
AT&T, she held positions in operations, marketing, sales and
finance, before becoming vice president of network operations.
Raised on Long Island, she received her bachelor's degree in
Spanish and education from the University and attended the Harvard
Advanced Management Program in 1985.
She serves on the Board of Directors of the New York Urban
Coalition and was a member of the board of the Plainfield YWCA
until 1986. In 1983, she was selected for the National YWCA Academy
of Women Achievers.
Gavin is married and has two teenage stepchildren.
