Home volleyball contests are a family-oriented affair
By David Tratner
For juniors Phoebe Folke and Sarah Fowler, two starting
players on the University volleyball team, home games take on an
extra special meaning.
Folke's sister, Katie, 12, and brothers, Matt, 10, and Brian,
8, have worked as ballpeople for this year's home matches in
Carpenter Sports Building. Fowler's brother, Laurence Franchetti,
13, also retrieves balls at the matches.
Folke, who lives in Bear, also has a rooting section at home
matches, with her mother and a combination of the other five Folke
children. Teammate Fowler, from Wilmington, is cheered on by her
mother and sister, Jennifer, a U.D. freshman, at every home match.
The two mothers often sit together.
Fowler said her family's presence has given her renewed
confidence. Folke called the family support encouraging.
Folke explained how the younger siblings gained an active role
on the team. "Coach (Barbara Viera) asked if they wouldn't mind
running after the balls. I said, 'Wouldn't mind! They'd love it!'
It makes them feel a part of the team and it feels good that I can
involve them in what I do."
Fowler also said she likes having her brother close by on the
court. "He cheers me on, and that's great," she said.
