Computer-driven team teaching
A dynamic trio-Judi Brown, Eileen Garland and Coreen Moncrief-
keeps the Newark Hall Training Center, the site of 32 Everex and 23
Macintosh computers, humming and functioning smoothly for users and
learners, from freshmen to professors, from "neobytes" to pros.
That's a tall order when, during a typical week of the spring
semester, 973 students and staff walked in to use computers, with
several more attending classes, bringing the total number of users
to 1,140.
The command post for the computer operation is located behind
the computer rooms where the team shares office space and
responsibilities. The captain is Brown, who is site supervisor,
while Garland is assistant supervisor in charge of equipment and
software configuration. Moncrief serves as student administrative
assistant in charge of student workers, who are the front-line team
members, organizing the users and giving help when needed.
The center staff offers computer instruction to everyone in
the University community who registers for the classes and teaches
custom classes at the request of faculty or staff. Computer
classroom space for faculty to use for teaching can be reserved.
Drop-ins may use the equipment on an availability basis.
The equipment is being upgraded, and two new high-quality,
high output printers have been installed. A do-it-yourself
audiovisual training room is being set up for self-instruction, and
in the future, it may be possible to check out instructional disks
to use on VCRs.
The center, thanks to the training triumvirate which keeps it
operating seven days a week, has a reputation of being
user-friendly, as it serves the computing needs of the University.
