USGS research funds
The U.S. Geological Survey, Department of the Interior, is
seeking applications under the Water Resources Research Grant
Program, which provides matching funds for fundamental and
practical research of general applicability to water
resource-related problems.
Proposals are invited in the following six research categories
(the percentage of the available funds expected to be allocated to
each category is included): social sciences, 20 percent;
ground-water flow and transport, 15 percent; water quality, 15
percent; biological sciences, 15 percent; engineering, 15 percent;
and climate and hydrologic processes, 20 percent.
The federal share of a grant in this program is limited to
$175,000. Applications are due at USGS by Nov. 19.

Big Apple bus trips
New York City bus trips will leave from the Perkins Student
Center on many Saturdays this fall from Sept. 21 through Dec. 7.
All trips depart from the Student Center at 8 a.m., returning at 8
p.m.
Participants can plan their own itineraries for a day in the
Big Apple. Cost is $20 for full-time undergraduates with I.D. and
$25 for other U.D. students, faculty, staff and guests. One guest
may accompany each person with an I.D. There are no refunds,
exchanges or substitutions.
Interested persons may sign up in the Programs Office, 107
Perkins Student Center, from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. When available,
tickets are sold up until noon on the Friday before a trip.
Trips are scheduled for Sept. 21, Oct. 12 and 19, Nov. 9 and
23 and Dec. 7. For more information, call the Programs Office

Emergency number
Faculty and staff needing emergency ambulance service while on
campus are reminded that they may call the Department of Public
Safety at 451-2222. The emergency number of 911 can be used but the
campus service is close.
Senate schedule
The Faculty Senate will hold its meetings this fall at 4 p.m.,
Mondays, Sept. 16, Oct. 7, Nov. 4 and Dec. 2, in 110 Memorial Hall.
Staff lunch Sept. 17
The University Staff Association will hold its September
luncheon Tuesday, Sept. 17, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Rodney Room
of the Perkins Student Center. Phyllis Dunham of Everlasting
Bouquets and Herbs in Odessa will discuss the drying and processing
of herbs for making wreaths. She will have some items available for
sale and has donated a pot of herbs for the monthly raffle.
The luncheon menu includes juice, Delaware club sandwich, cole
slaw, chips, pickles, olives, layer cake and choice of beverage.
Cost is $5.50. For those who plan to attend and bring their own
lunch, cost is $1.
Reservations are due by Wednesday, Sept. 11, and should be
sent to Gladys McCarthy, Sponsored Programs Administration.

Perkins plant sale
A plant sale will be held in the Perkins Student Center
Gallery across from the main desk from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sept. 3-10.
There will be hundreds of plants to choose from for rooms,
apartments or offices. Among those offered for sale will be ferns,
English ivy, Norfolk Island pines, orange trees, rubber plants,
spider plants, prayer plants, umbrella plants, hanging baskets and
terrarium plants.
The sale is sponsored by the Perkins Student Center.
Academy registration
In-person registration for the fall semester of the Southern
Delaware Academy of Lifelong Learning (SDALL), a program of the
University's Division of Continuing Education, will be held from 10
a.m.-2 p.m,. Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 10-11, at the
University's Milford Center.
Mail-in membership and registration forms also are available
by calling the academy at 424-5000.
The SDALL fall semester, which begins Sept.23, will feature 21
different courses.
Membership and participation in SDALL are open to persons 55

Football brunches
The Office of Alumni Relations will host a brunch before the
Delaware-Massachusetts football game on Sept. 7 and the
Delaware-William & Mary game on Sept. 14. Cost is $10 per person.
The Sept. 7 brunch will be held from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., in
the Murray D. Lincoln Campus Center, Room 1101, at the University
of Massachusetts.
The Sept. 14 brunch will be held from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m, at
the Hospitality House, 415 Richmond Rd., Williamsburg.
Skip Cook, alumni associate, said the brunches are designed to
update local alumni on campus developments and plans. Members of
the athletic department will be on hand to provide insight into the
1991 Fightin' Blue Hens squad.

The Morris Library staff will hold an orientation for new
