New visitors parking lot to open
Parking on campus should be a little easier this semester,
thanks to an increase in the number of parking spaces on both Ray
Street and South College Avenue.
According to Richard S. Hester, traffic manager in the
Department of Public Safety, the University added 165 parking
spaces this summer, bringing the total number on campus to 7,720.
Most of the new parking spaces are assigned to students living
in the Ray Street residence halls, Hester said. The Ray Street lot
is a gold sticker parking area with room for 120 vehicles.
The rest of the new parking spaces are located near Kent Way
and South College Avenue. Hester said several small parking lots
behind the University Honors Program buildings, the Center for
Black Culture and the new Visitors Center at 192 South College Ave.
were combined to form a new visitors' lot with 160 available
spaces.
This new visitors lot replaces a visitors' lot at 25 Amstel
Ave. The new visitor parking is a pay-per-hour lot, which is
available to the University community when not in use for special
event parking, he said. The rate is 50 cents per half hour, Monday
through Friday, and 25 cents to enter on the weekends.
The old visitors lot has been changed to a restricted
card-access lot for faculty and staff, Hester said. The 115-space
lot is reserved for faculty and staff from 2 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday
through Friday. On weeknights, and from 6 p.m., Friday, to 2 a.m.,
Monday, the lot is open for general use. At all times, a valid
University parking permit is required, he said.
Hester said the Townsend Hall parking lot was changed from a
blue sticker lot to a gold sticker lot this summer in keeping with
a University rule that faculty and staff purchase gold stickers.
Editor's Note: Faculty and staff who are interested in parking in
the card access lot at 25 Amstel Ave. should call Jennifer Sparks
at public safety, telephone 451-1184.
