Henry C. Foley selected Catalysis Center director

Henry C. Foley, associate professor of chemical engineering,
was named director of the Center for Catalytic Science and
Technology in the College of Engineering, effective Aug. 1, Costel
D. Denson, interim dean, announced today.
Since 1987, Foley has been an associate director of the
Catalysis Center, concentrating his research in the areas of novel
materials for separation and catalysis, reaction engineering for
materials design, carbon molecular sieves, inorganic and metallic
membranes, and plasma processing of materials. His research has led
to four U.S. patents.
As director, Foley said he hopes to "maintain and enhance" the
center's "drive for scholarly excellence through its integrated
programs of research, teaching and industrial collaboration.
"The last three years have been a period of unparalleled real
growth for the center on all fronts, and I will maintain this
momentum," he said.
Foley succeeds Michael T. Klein, professor of chemical
engineering, who was named chairperson of the department July 1.
Soon after joining the faculty in 1986, Foley received the
prestigious National Science Foundation Presidential Young
Investigator Award, in recognition of his research in the areas of
electronic materials and catalysis. He is one of eight Delaware
faculty to be so honored in the past 15 years.
Foley holds a Ph.D. in physical-inorganic chemistry from
Pennsylvania State University, as well as a master's degree in
physical chemistry from Purdue University and a bachelor of science
degree in chemistry from Providence College.
He first came to Delaware in 1982 as a postdoctoral fellow in
the center, the same year he began working with the Discovery
Research Department of the Chemical Research Division at American
Cyanamid Co., where he held several positions over the next four
years before joining the Department of Chemical Engineering faculty
in 1986.
