WEINACHT NAMED PROFESSOR EMERITUS

Richard Weinacht, who joined the UD faculty in 1963, was named professor emeritus in the Department of Mathematical Sciences in recognition of his many years of distinguished service to the University, effective Aug. 31, 2002.

His interest is focused on partial differential equations arising from problems in mathematical physics with an emphasis on singular and degenerate equations and related non-well posed problems.

During his career, Weinacht held several positions in the United States and abroad, including serving as a researcher at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the summer of 1966 and at Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute in 1969-70, a Fulbright Fellow at the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt in Germany in 1976-77, a visitor at the University of Rome in 1984, a visiting professor at the University of Florence in Italy in 1995 and a visiting scholar at Brown University in 1999. He also was fellow of the Center for Advanced Study at UD.

Weinacht received his bachelor's degree from the University of Notre Dame and his master's degree in civil engineering from Columbia University, both in civil engineering, and his doctorate in mathematics from the University of Maryland.
