Auction will climax this year's
MBNA Blue Hen Golf Classic
A talk by new UD head football coach K.C. Keeler, an auction featuring a 1981 DeLorean sports car (made famous in the movie Back to the Future) and a web site for bidding on auction items highlight the 11th annual MBNA Blue Hen Golf Classic, scheduled Monday, Sept. 23, at the DuPont Country Club in Wilmington.
Interested golfers may still sign up to play in the tournament, which benefits UD athletic scholarships. The fundraising event, which raised more than $100,000 for scholarships last year, is open to alumni and friends of the University.
The tournament's first prize is a genuine leather football helmet, as once worn by the Fightin' Blue Hens, signed by former head football coach Tubby Raymond and current head coach K.C. Keeler. Other golf prizes include a Rolex watch, courtesy of Carl Doubet Jewelers; a Harley-Davidson, courtesy of Mike's Harley Davidson; and $1 million, courtesy of American Express Financial Services.
This year's event also will include a tennis classic round robin tournament, and UD's cheerleaders and the nation's top mascot, Delaware's irrepressible YoUDee, will be on hand.
Concluding the day will be a Gala Auction Party, sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware, including live and silent auctions.
For the first time this year, auction items will be featured on the World Wide Web, where interested persons may bid in advance of the live auction Sept. 23. A link to the auction site is available at [www.udel.edu/PR/GolfClassic].
Items in this year's auction, in addition to the 1981 DeLorean sports car, include a variety of vacation packages, airline tickets, fine jewelry, tickets to art and sporting events, sports memorabilia, golf packages and gift certificates for dining.
