SOUNDS OF CELTIC WOMEN

A free concert entitled "Celtic Women Then and Now," featuring guest artist soprano Jennifer Carnahan and Jennifer Barker, UD assistant professor of music, on piano, will be presented at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 21, in the Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building.

The program features the traditional White Tartan songs of Scotland and new music written by living Scottish composers. Included are A Suite o Bairnsangs (A Suite of Children's Songs) by Thea Musgrave, Three Irish Folksong Settings by John Corigliano, John Maxwell Geddes' Seven Scots Songs, Two Songs by Carnahan and traditional Scottish songs, such as "Comin' Thro' the Rye," "Charlie Is My Darling" and "The Auld Scotch Songs."

Carnahan is a graduate of the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. Most recently, she performed a concert of operatic scenes and arias at the Advent Lutheran Church in New York City. She has performed with Opera Memphis, Virginia Opera, American Opera Projects, Nevada Opera Theatre, Metro Lyric Opera, the Jean Signature Theatre (off-Broadway debut) and the Liederkranz Club (Liederkranz Competition Winner).

A native of Scotland, Barker has written compositions that have been performed by symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, choirs and soloists on both sides of the Atlantic. She has won several competitions and awards, and a CD of her compositions, Nyvaigs, has been released by CRI. As a pianist, she has performed in recital with vocalists, instrumentalists and chamber ensembles on both sides of the Atlantic.
