SUNDAY, SEPT. 29
JEFFERSON WINNER IN CONCERT
Soprano Kimberly Doucette will perform a free recital, "Siren Song? Artistic Echoes of Women," at 5 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 29, in Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building.
A graduate student, Doucette is the inaugural winner of the Jefferson Prize in Music, a new award made possible through the support of Edward G. and Naomi L. Jefferson. The Jefferson Prize, awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate or graduate music major to encourage ongoing research and study, may be used to fund summer research, specialized study in performance or attendance at a music festival or workshop. Doucette used her award to further her research on music of women composers.
The Sept. 29 program features art songs based on the lives of historical and mythical women, including selections from Libby Larsen's Songs from Letters, based on Calamity Jane's letters to her daughter, and from Jake Heggie's Eve-Song, a feminist interpretation of the biblical character Eve. A painting exhibition by Carrie Ann Jones-Baade reflecting the themes of the concert will accompany the performance.
