Marjorie W. Purcell
Recognized by UD Women's Club
For her many contributions and involvement with the Newark and University communities, Marjorie W. Purcell has been named the University of Delaware Women's Club 2002 Woman of the Year. She will be honored at a luncheon Wednesday, May 15, in Clayton Hall.
Purcell was instrumental in founding the Friends of the Library, which helped build the Newark Free Library on Library Avenue and supported its expansion in 2001.
She has taken in many international graduate students. One of her current projects is arranging for women visitors from overseas to meet with women's groups in Delaware and meet women who may have similar positions, occupations or interests.
An active member of the League of Women Voters, she is current secretary of the American Association of University Women, a founding member of the Great Decisions Group and also serves as class coeditor for her alma mater, Arcadia College. She also supports the Newark and Delaware symphony orchestras.
The widow of the late Ralph Purcell, who was on the UD faculty, she has three children and one grandchild. She grew up Winston Salem, N.C., has lived in India, Poland, Austria and Germany and has traveled worldwide.
