The Center for International Studies (CFIS) is seeking nominations from academic departments for its annual research assistantship competition. The award package includes a competitive stipend and a standard tuition waiver for the 2002-03 nine-month academic year. One nomination will be accepted per department. Applicants must be nominated by their department chairpersons and have completed a minimum of 12 credits at the graduate level.

The research assistant will work with the CFIS director of international projects on a range of issues related to the center's operation, such as research for ongoing CFIS initiatives, programs and scholarly publications, as well as grant prospect development and writing.

Requirements include:

• Strong research and writing skills,
  
  
• Ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines,
  
  
• A high degree of comfort with the use of the Internet as a research tool,
  
  
• Professional fluency in spoken and written English and
  
  
• Previous experience with research on international subjects.
  
  

Preferences include:

• Additional computing experience (Excel, Access, HTML, SPSS/Minitab),
  
  
• Functional knowledge of a second language and
  
  
• International work and/or travel experience.

Applications must include:

• a personal statement by the nominee,
  
  
• a recent writing sample,
  
  
• a nomination letter by the chairperson of the nominee's academic department,
  
  
• a recommendation letter by the nominee's academic adviser,
  
  
• a copy of the nominee's transcript and
  
  
• curriculum vita or resume.

Department chairs should submit three copies of each nomination to CFIS Research Assistantship, Center for International Studies, 4 Kent Way, by May 3.

Interviews of finalists will be conducted in mid-May, and the final selection is expected to be made by the end of May.
