EARLY MUSIC ENSEMBLES
TO PRESENT TWO CONCERTS
The University of Delaware Department of Music will present two free concerts by Collegium Musicum, directed by Michael O'Connor, at 8 p.m., Tuesday, April 30, and Thursday, May 9. Both concerts are in Bayard Sharp Hall.
Collegium Musicum is part of the Early Music Program at the University of Delaware and provides instrumentalists and vocalists the opportunity to study and perform music from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque.
The April 30 concert, "400 Years of Spanish Music," features music from Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque Spain. Collegium Musicum will perform a wide variety of Spanish music including medieval cantigas and sacred music; Renaissance villancicos performed by a vocal quintet; Renaissance bands of shawms, trombones and recorders; three baroque chamber pieces featuring oboes, recorders, solo voice; and a quintessentially Spanish continuo group of guitars and harp.
The May 9 concert features guest artist Stanley Curtis, who plays baroque trumpet and cornetto. His ensemble consists of Alexandra MacCracken, baroque violin; Graydon Barnum, sackbut; James Bolyard, curtal; and Thomas MacCracken, organ; and they will perform music from the 17th-century Austrian repertory. In addition, the University of Delaware Baroque Orchestra will perform Giuseppi Torelli's Concerto for Trumpet, G.1 with Curtis as soloist.
