City of Newark to hold annual
Memorial Day celebration, parade

The city of Newark will pay tribute to the nation's war dead, May 17-19 with a weekend of activities that include a Civil War reenactment, outdoor concert and parade.

Events begin Friday, May 17, with Civil War reenactors setting up camp at White Clay Creek State Park. The camp is open Friday afternoon to Sunday morning, and park entrance fees will be in effect.

On Saturday, May 18, there will be an outdoor concert featuring Delaware's award-winning 287th Army National Guard Band playing selections from march to swing to current music. The event will be behind the Academy Building at Main and Academy streets. Seating and refreshments will be provided.

The formal Memorial Day ceremony takes place Sunday, May 19, on the University of Delaware Mall, starting at 1 p.m. University ROTC units will provide the color guard and wreath bearer. The names of Delawareans who lost their lives while on active duty during World War II and the Korean War will be read aloud. The ceremony includes drill presentations, colorful flags and music. At 2 p.m., 80 military units will parade down Main Street.
