ASAP SOFTWARE EXPRESS

When you order software from ASAP Software Express through UDMart [http://www.udel.edu/udmart/], you have three options for obtaining your legal copy of the software:

1. Purchase just a license--without media--then borrow the software CD(s) from someone in your department who already has a licensed copy.

2. Purchase just a license--without media--then bring the proof of your license and the appropriate number of blank CDs to the Technology Solutions Center (002B Smith Hall). If you are unsure of the number of CDs the software requires, send e-mail to tsc-info@udel.edu to find out how many you will need.

3. Purchase the license with the media. ASAP will ship the software to you.

Remember, when you "buy" software, you are usually purchasing a license to use that software. You do not have all rights over the software whose license you have purchased.

UD SITE LICENSES

For some software packages, UD has already paid a fee so all employees and students have access to a free, legal copy of the software (called a site license). For example, one of the software packages UD has a site license for is Netscape Communicator.

Before you purchase a new software package, check the UD Software Distribution web site [http://www.udel.edu/sw/] to see if UD already has a site license for the software.

PRICE COMPARISONS

UD departments can purchase Microsoft licenses at very aggressive academic discounts. For example, below are the prices as of Jan. 29. (Unless noted, all versions include CDs, license and manuals.)

However, if you have identified an individual in your department to maintain the licensing information, and if that person
also maintains the media for software used in your department, you can save a good deal of money by purchasing only the ASAP (license only) option ($48.46).

For example, rather than purchasing the Microsoft Office XP Professional software for five users at the discount catalog price, you could purchase ASAP license only (department) for five users--a savings of over $2,100!
