SERVICE
Benjamin Steiner, sociology and criminal justice, was one of several scholars featured in the most recent issue of the Chicago Reporter, an investigative monthly that identifies, analyzes and reports on social, economic and political issues in metropolitan Chicago. The article drew on Steiner's publication, "Death Sentencing in Black and White: An Empirical Analysis of Juror Race and Jury Racial Composition in Capital Sentencing," which appeared in Pennsylvania Journal of Constitutional Law.
Mark Mankin, facilities, represented the state of Delaware Facility Management Professionals at the International Facility Management Association's world workplace conference, Kansas City, Mo.
AWARDS
John C. Kraft, H. Fletcher Brown Professor of Geology, was presented the Outstanding Achievement Award by the University of Minnesota to distinguished graduates on Sept. 20. The award recognized him as an outstanding scientist, effective teacher and mentor and "articulate spokesperson" for public policies.
Leonard W. Schwartz, mechanical engineering, received the 2001 Roon Award of the Federation of Societies for Coatings Technology Nov. 7 for a paper coauthored with Richard R, Eley of ICI Paints, "Interaction of Theology, Geometry and Process in Coating Flows." The paper was presented at the federation's conference Nov. 5 in Atlanta.
Cynthia E. Shermeyer, human resources, received the Outstanding Adult and Family Literacy Service Award, Sept. 14, from the Delaware Interagency Council on Adult Literacy, a statewide committee chaired by the lieutenant governor. She serves as a board member of the Delaware Coalition for Literacy.
Tracey Bryant, marine public education, won the top individual sweepstakes award from the National Federation of Press Women, based on the number of national awards she has received from the organization. Bryant received five first-place awards and one second-place award for web, advertising and public relations projects.
Suzanne Nanis and Kim Hirschenhofer, Information Technologies/User Services, won first place in a SCM SIGUCCS documentation competition in October for an instructional article, "Using Netscape Messenger Effectively."
