This fifth class of Athletics Hall of Fame inductees brings to 43 the total number of former UD athletes, coaches and friends who have been honored. The Class of 2001 was recognized during ceremonies Nov. 9 at the Bob Carpenter Center and Nov. 10 during the Delaware vs. Richmond football game in Delaware Stadium.
In addition to Chance, the Class of 2001 includes:
- Edwin W. "Ed" Thompson, a three-sport standout in football, basketball and baseball during his career with the Blue Hens from 1933-35;
- 1940s track and field and basketball standout William L. "Bill" Gerow, who was once called the "fastest human in Delaware";
- * Football linebacker and baseball standout from 1984-87 Darrell L. Booker, who still holds school records for tackles in a game (23), season (153) and career (506);
- Track and field and cross country standout Carl-Olaf Homen, a native of Finland who dominated the running scene and was virtually unbeatable during in his only season (1959-60) of competition;
- Three-time All-American field hockey player, member of the U.S. National Team and current UD coach Carol A. Miller, who graduated in 1982;
- Lacrosse and field hockey All-American and 1989 UD Outstanding Senior Female Athlete of the Year Natalie R. "Nari" (Bush) Brickley;
- Former all-time women's basketball leading scorer Lori G. Howard, who set 13 school records in the 1979-80 season and was 1981's UD Outstanding Senior Female Athlete of the Year;
- Four-time conference tennis champion, who graduated in 1989, and current UD head coach Laura A. (LeRoy) Travis; and
- Outstanding All-American UD golfer from 1977-1981 Oscar L. Mestre.
