United Way campaign begins Oct. 22
The Way Delaware Cares" is the theme of UD's 2001 United Way campus campaign, which runs from Oct. 22-Nov. 16.
According to Vice President for Administration Maxine Colm, the University of Delaware campaign goal this year is $190,000.
"As we begin this year's annual United Way campaign, I ask our employees to contribute as much as they can," Colm said. "In light of the tragic events on Sept. 11, the work of the United Way has taken on particular importance. The members of the University of Delaware community have always been most generous in their support of United Way, and we intend to meet this year's campus goal."
To accommodate the desire to donate money toward the national relief effort, the University set up a special link on its home page to a page entitled, "An American Tragedy: Our Community Responds," which includes a link so that visitors can make a gift to the United Way Disaster Relief Fund. All donations will be credited to UD's campus campaign.
According to UD President David Roselle, "This year, with the national tragedy, the United Way campaign is unique. People want to give specifically to help the victims of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Some will donate through the United Way to express their concerns and help their neighbors in need.
"We must keep in mind also that local agencies depend heavily upon contributions from our campus community. Therefore, we're confident that our University employees will be extra generous and will help us continue a proud tradition of giving to United Way."
Noting that the University of Delaware has been a major force in helping the United Way meet its statewide goal, Colm added that many members of the University community have a close association with the organization's member agencies.
"Some of our employees, as well as their family members and neighbors, have benefited richly from services provided by United Way agencies. Other employees work as volunteers, helping those in need. Our annual campus drive provides an opportunity to contribute through a one-time donation or payroll deduction, and even the smallest donation is appreciated and helpful to those in need."
The annual kickoff to the campaign will take place Oct. 22 in the Bob Carpenter Center, where Chuck Anderson, president of United Way of Delaware, will address campaign solicitors and urge them to encourage their fellow employees to support the campaign.
The annual Pacesetter Campaign, involving UD administrators and senior-level employees who donate to jumpstart the annual effort, began Sept. 17 and extends through Oct. 12. The Retiree Campaign is scheduled from Oct. 1-26.
After the conclusion of the Employee Campaign on Nov. 16, the employee incentive drawing will be held on Nov. 29.
According to Richie Holland, campaign chair and manager of human resources, "All employees will receive information in the mail about the campaign, and the electronic pledge form will be available on our UD United Way web site [www.udel.edu/unitedway] and from a special link on the University's home page. The web site also will feature a variety of useful information on the campaign, from an online version of the solicitors' guide to a complete list of campaign incentives.
"This year," Holland said, "our solicitors will play a significant communication role throughout the campaign, answering questions, directing employees to the web site for information and reminding them of the importance of givingand, of course, letting them know when the campaign deadline is approaching."
