Poetry helps express emotions about the tragedies

At the reading, Deborah Fox, a senior secretary in the English department, sings "America the Beautiful.

Graduate and undergraduate students from UD's Department of English, nine faculty members and 10 campus ministers read poetry on the steps of Memorial Hall from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 21, to express their concerns about the tragedies of Sept. 11.

The event, originated by Lois Potter, Ned B. Allen Professor of English, included readings of original works, as well as the poetry of T.S. Eliot, Allen Ginsberg, John Donne and others. Many also elected to read works by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet W.D. Snodgrass, who is Distinguished Professor Emeritus in Creative Writing and Contemporary Poetry.
