'Hendrix' of flute in concert
On Tuesday, Oct. 30, New Music Delaware: Festival of Contemporary Music will present guest composer and flutist Robert Dick in a free concert at 8 p.m. in the Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building. The artist also will present a master class, free and open to the public, at 2:30 p.m. in the Amy E. du Pont Music Building. Dick's appearance is sponsored by the Department of Music, with funding provided The Brannen-Cooper Fund.
Dick has been hailed for revolutionizing the sound of his instrument. His concerts include performances on flute, alto flute, bass flutes in C and F and the giant, stand-up contrabass flute, playing chords, harmonies and percussion simultaneously with melodies.
Jazz Times said, "There are few musicians who are truly revolutionary; Robert Dick is one of these." Frequently compared to Paganini and Jimi Hendrix as a virtuoso who has redefined his instrument, Dick has been hailed as a composer with fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and a Guggenheim Fellowship for composition. At the premiere of his Concerto for Flute/Bass Flute, Strings and Percussion, The New York Times described the work as "riveting in its timbral variety."
