The Newark Area Welfare Committee (NAWC) has designated Friday, Oct. 26, as Good Neighbor Day, a time when volunteers turn out at supermarkets and banks to accept donations, sell their "Good Neighbor Bean Soup Mix" and distribute literature about the committee.

Since 1930, NAWC volunteers have been helping those in need by providing cash assistance for rent, utilities, temporary shelter or prescription medicines.

Other NAWC programs, which help to provide food and clothing to needy families and low-income senior citizens, include Food Cupboard, Shoe Program, Christmas Program and Hope Grocery Program.
