SUNDAY, OCT. 14 UD ORCHESTRA TO PRESENT FREE CONCERT The University Orchestra, directed by Hekun Wu, music, will present a free concert, at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 14, in the Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building. The program includes the Symphony No.1 of Beethoven, Fauré's Pelleas et Melisande Suite and Ancient Dances and Airs, Suite No.1 by Respighi. Born in Shanghai, Wu studied at the Shanghai conservatory, Conservatoire de Paris, Boston University and the University of Minnesota. As a concert cellist, Wu, who also teaches cello at UD, has performed to critical acclaim as both concerto soloist with orchestras and as a recitalist in Asia, Europe and the United States. WEDNESDAY, OCT. 24 UD TEUT FEST The Department of Music introduced the UD TEUT Festival with an outdoor concert Oct. 7. As part of the fest, an 8 p.m. free chamber music recital will be held Wednesday, Oct. 24, in the Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building. The concert of solo and chamber music for low brass features Brian Brown, principal tuba with the Delaware Symphony, who will perform Philadelphia composer Kyle Smith's Concerto for Tuba, and Rocky Snyder, principal euphonium with the Chesapeake Silver Cornet Brass Band, who will play Alexander Guilmant's Morceau Symphonique. Also performing are Jay Hildebrandt, trombone, and Julie Nishimura, piano. Call 831-1263. THURSDAY, NOV. 6 JOHN JOHNS GUITAR RECITAL Guitarist John Johns will perform in a free recital at 8 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 6, in Bayard Sharp Hall. The program features the Suite in D Major by J.S. Bach, Renaissance lute pieces, Danza Espanola No. 5 by Granados, La fille aux cheveau de lin by Debussy, works by Reis, Pujol, Guimaraes and Brindle and two traditional American fiddle tunes. At his New York debut recital in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, The New York Times called Johns a "first-rate performer with sure fingers and a firm musical sense...a sensitive instrumentalist." He performed to critical acclaim on National Public Radio's Concert Guitar, which featured some of the world's leading guitarists. His recording, John Johns Plays Bach, Bennett, Brouwer and Others, has received international praise from leading guitar periodicals. |
MONDAY, OCT. 29 DEL'ARTE ENSEMBLE IN CONCERT The Del'Arte Woodwind Ensemble will present a free concert at 8 p.m., Monday, Oct. 29, in the Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building. The program includes Petite Suite by Charles Gounod, Partita by Irving Fine, Down-Hollow Winds by Martin Butler and Six Bagatelles by Gyorgy Ligeti. Featured in the Gounod, along with the Del'Arte, are UD music students Sarah Gerk, clarinet; Roberta Watts, oboe; Erica Eklund, bassoon; and Lauren Robinson, horn. Members of the ensemble are Eileen Grycky, flute; Lloyd Shorter, oboe; Charles Salinger, clarinet; Jon Gaarder, bassoon; and Cynthia Carr, horn. As ensemble-in-residence at the University of Delaware, the Del'Arte Quintet explores the exciting and unique tradition of wind chamber music from the 18th century to the present. Del'Arte ensemble members are all individually active as recitalists and members of other performing ensembles. MONDAY, NOV. 12 COLLEGIUIM MUSICUM CONCERT A free concert by Collegium Musicum, directed by Michael O'Connor, music, will be held at 8 p.m., Monday, Nov. 12, in Bayard Sharp Hall. Collegium Musicum is part of the Early Music Program at UD and provides instrumentalists and vocalists an opportunity to study and perform music from the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque periods. The program, "Echos of Versaille," will feature music of the French Baroque. Guest artists include Daniel Rippe, viola de gamba; Wendy Harton, violin; and Tim Miller, therorbo. WEDNESDAY, NOV. 13 INTERMUSICA SERIES CONTINUES An Intermusica chamber music concert will be held at 8 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 13 at Loudis Recital Hall in the Amy E. du Pont Music Building. The free program is directed by Cynthia Carr, music. Each year, the Intermusica concerts present chamber music from the Baroque through the 20th century, with a particular focus on music for less frequently heard instrumental combinations. More than a dozen students will perform in ensembles that include a brass quintet, a voice-horn-piano trio and other combinations. A special feature is the appearance of Triolet, which clarinetist Sarah Gerk, hornist Lauren Robinson and pianist Elaina Denney.
