Volunteers needed for CHOICES Program

Faculty and staff are needed as volunteers in the CHOICES program for middle school students, sponsored by the UD Office for School-to-Work in the College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy and the Delaware Business/Industry/ Education Alliance.

CHOICES is an ideal opportunity for members of the UD community to get involved in community outreach, according to school-to-work director Douglas Hill, and the three-hour training is conveniently offered on campus in the Willard Hall Education Building.

The innovative program is a series of entertaining and educational exercises designed to engage the interest and participation of middle school students. The first exercise involves fortune cookies, which contain factors affecting who individual students are, followed by a discussion of what factors cannot be changed, such as gender and family, and those that are under a person's control, such as attitude and goals.

Other exercises involve role acting and discussions on time management, money management, decision-making and the importance of education in increasing career and life options.

A final exercise is a future impact worksheet about students' academic decisions.
