UD requests support for major construction projects

University of Delaware President David P. Roselle Nov. 17 outlined UD's request for $12.3 million in capital funds in support of numerous construction projects, including renovation and expansion of two major landmarks on its historic Mall.

The capital request, presented to members of the governor's executive staff, includes $5 million for the renovation of Wolf Hall, a classroom, office and laboratory building for departments in the College of Arts and Science, and $4 million for renovation and an addition to neighboring DuPont Hall, home of the College of Engineering.

Total cost of the Wolf Hall renovation is $26 million, of which UD will seek $22.5 million from the state over a five-year period. Built in 1916, Wolf Hall is one of the most significant buildings on the Mall–both historically and architecturally.

The project, to be completed in 2003, will provide upgrades of the building's mechanical and electrical systems, classrooms, offices and laboratories. It will provide improved office space and laboratories for faculty, staff and students in the departments of Biology and Psychology.

Total cost of the DuPont Hall project is $23.7 million, of which UD will seek a total of $7.5 million from the state. The University is raising the remaining $16.2 million privately, with more than $12.8 million already raised as part of UD's Campaign for Delaware. The project, scheduled to be completed in spring 2002, will provide modern classrooms, offices and laboratories for faculty, staff and students in the College of Engineering.

Other capital requests include:

  • $1.5 million to construct a new 27,000-square-foot facility for the Department of Art. The new building will replace the outdated, three-structure Hollingsworth art buildings on North College Avenue;
  • $1 million in equipment funds for the biotechnology, genetics and molecular biology programs at UD;
  • $300,000 to stabilize the shoreline from further erosion at the Lewes campus; and
  • $500,000 to upgrade the mechanical system at the Otis Smith Laboratory on the Lewes campus.
