Geologist honored for service

The Eastern section of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) has named John H. Talley as the recipient of the prestigious George V. Cohee Public Service Award.

Associate director of the Delaware Geological Survey (DGS) at UD, Talley was presented with the award at the AAPG's annual meeting of the Eastern Section, Sept. 24, in London, Ontario, Canada.

"John H. Talley epitomizes diligence and competence in his enthusiastic application of geologic science for public benefit," Robert R. Jordan, state geologist and DGS director, said. "For his example and leadership, we honor the long and distinguished service that he has given to our profession and to the public."

A registered geologist in Delaware and Pennsylvania, and a Certified Professional Geologist of the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG), Talley has served on dozens of boards, committees and tasks forces for university and government agencies and professional organizations.

A 27-year member of the DGS, Talley has served as the survey's associate director for eight years and has lectured extensively on the geology and hydrology of Delaware.

Talley holds a bachelor or arts degree from the University of Delaware and a master's from Franklin and Marshall College, and is current vice president of the Capitol Section of AIPG and is on the editorial board of Geotimes, a newsmagazine of the earth sciences.

Founded in 1917, the AAPG is the world's largest professional geological society, with over 30,000 members.

The award, which recognizes distinguished service and achievement in public affairs by geologists, is named in honor of the late George V. Cohee, who had a distinguished career with state and federal agencies that involved applications of geology in the public interest.
