Swimmer named best scholar-athlete of 2000

University of Delaware swimmer Brian McGillen has been named the 1999-2000 America East Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

McGillen compiled a 3.83 cumulative grade point average in biology and finished in the top 10 in six events at the America East Swimming and Diving Championships that were held in Newark last February to help the Fightin' Blue Hens win their fourth straight conference title.

McGillen, who graduated last May, also was chosen as the conference's scholar-athlete in men's swimming for the second consecutive year. He earned third team Academic All-American honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America last spring and was a finalist for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship this summer.

A two-time CoSIDA District II All-Academic selection and a four-time America East Honor Roll recipient, McGillen recorded 15 top 10 finishes for his career, including three second-place finishes.

On Oct. 2, four UD students were named 1999-2000 America East Scholar-Athletes of the Year in their respective sports.

McGillen was honored for the second straight year, while Troy Bockius was honored in men's indoor track and field.

Sarah Edwards was the recipient in women's lacrosse, and Michael Reh was the winner in men's outdoor track and field.

The four were among 15 student-athletes honored by America East as the top scholar-athlete in each sport. To be eligible, nominees must have a 3.2 or better grade point index and be a starter or key reserve on his or her team. The student-athletes were selected from a committee of athletics administrators and NCAA Faculty Athletics Representatives.
