A full-day symposium at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society in August in Washington, D.C., honored Arnold Rheingold, chemistry, for his contributions to the field of crystallography. The Division of Inorganic Chemistry sponsored the symposium, "Molecular Crystallography in the Service of Inorganic and Organometallic Chemistry," which featured 19 papers presented by scientists, all highlighting the contributions made to their programs through collaboration with Rheingold's research laboratory. Rheingold is an international leader in the field of molecular structure characterization by X-ray diffraction, which allows chemists to have a molecular scale, three-dimensional "picture" of the molecules they prepare and use. He has established collaborations with chemists from about 30 universities and corporations in the study of new crystalline materials. He is widely published and has served on the editorial boards of several professional journals. A graduate of Case Western Reserve University, Rheingold received his doctorate from the University of Maryland and came to the University of Delaware in 1982. |
