Lacrosse All-American named state's NCAA athlete

UD's women's lacrosse All-American Sarah Edwards has received yet another honor as an outstanding student athlete.

Edwards, who capped a four-year career by leading the Blue Hen women's lacrosse team to the 2000 NCAA Tournament, has been selected the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Woman of the Year for the state of Delaware.

Edwards, a native of Moorestown, N.J., was one of 51 NCAA female student-athletes from throughout the country selected by an NCAA committee. Although not a finalist, she will be honored at the 10th annual NCAA Woman of the Year banquet Oct. 15 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom in Indianapolis.

Edwards, who will earn her degree in elementary education this winter and has a 3.75 grade point index, was named to the prestigious GTE/College Sports Information Directors of America national Academic All-American first team this past spring.

She was one of three UD student-athletes named to a CoSIDA Academic All-American team during the 1999-2000 season and was the first Blue Hen student-athlete to earn first team Academic All-American honors since track and field standout Alison Farrance was honored in both 1985 and 1986.

A senior midfielder, Edwards earlier this year was named first team All-America East, first team All-Mid Atlantic Region, and third team Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-American.

She tied for the team lead in scoring in 2000 with 56 points, scoring a team-high 42 goals and dishing out 14 assists to rank among the America East leaders.

She completed her career with 111 goals and 41 assists for 152 points.

Her goals and point totals both rank in the Top 15 all-time in Delaware history.

Under head coach Denise Wescott in 2000, Delaware posted a 13-5 record, advanced to the America East semifinals and earned the school's first bid to the NCAA Tournament since 1984, before falling to No. 5 seed Loyola 14-4 in the first round.
