Campus United Way campaign to kick off Oct. 12

With U there's a way" is the theme for the 2000 United Way campaign, which runs from Oct. 12-31. According to Vice President for Administration Maxine Colm, this year's UD campaign goal is $210,000.

"As we begin this year's annual United Way campaign, I ask our employees to contribute as much as they can," Colm said. "Members of the University of Delaware community have always been most generous in their support of United Way, and our institution has played a significant role in helping the statewide drive meet its annual goal.

"Some of our employees, as well as their family members and neighbors, have benefited richly from services provided by United Way agencies. Other employees work as volunteers, helping those in need. Our annual campus drive provides an opportunity to contribute through a one-time donation or payroll deduction, and even the smallest donation is appreciated and helpful to those in need."

According to UD President David Roselle, "The University of Delaware's relationship with United Way is special, and one that is an important part of campus life. Members of our faculty, staff and students are actively involved with United Way agencies, and participation in the annual fund raising drive is a UD tradition.

"We're also proud that we have consistently exceeded our campaign giving goal, and I urge all members of the University community to help us continue this tradition of excellence. Our employees have been generous in sharing their good fortune and recognizing the value of the United Way's important role in our community."

Keynote speaker for the campaign kickoff on Oct. 12 will be James A. Wolfe, Plant Manager, DaimlerChrysler Corp. and 2000 United Way of Delaware statewide campaign chair. The annual kickoff also will feature the premiere of this year's campaign video, produced by Robert DiIorio, University Media Services.

According to Joyce Henderson, campaign chair, the United Way video and the electronic pledge form will be available at the start of the campaign on the United Way web site, [www.udel.edu/ unitedway], and from a special link on the University's home page. The web site also will feature a variety of useful information on the campaign, from an online version of the solicitors' guide to a complete list of campaign incentives.

Nancy Wallace, Human Resources, said the role of the campus solicitor has changed significantly this year.

"The role of our United Way solicitors is changing," she said. "In past years, solicitor efforts centered on collecting and recording pledges. As a result of the new electronic pledge form which automates contribution recordkeeping, solicitors can better focus their energies on marketing the United Way to colleagues and responding to questions about agencies and programs."
