Two new emeritus professors
A new scholarship has been established at the University of Delaware in honor of William H. Williams of Georgetown, who was a vital member of the University Parallel Program and the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program in Southern Delaware for 33 years. A history professor, Williams has a particular interest in Delaware and early American history. The new award recognizes the focus of his research and writing by giving an annual scholarship to a student who demonstrates outstanding ability in the field of American history during the period of 1607 to 1812. The first recipient was Kristin Leahy of Philadelphia, a senior UD history major, who received the scholarship at Honors Day in May. He is the author of The Garden of American Methodism: The Delmarva Peninsula, 1769-1820, The First State: An Illustrated History of Delaware, America's First Hospital: The Pennsylvania Hospital 1751-1841, and Slavery and Freedom in Delaware, 1639-1865. A tree was recently planted in Frank B. Dilley's honor by the Department of Philosophy. Dilley served as chairperson of the philosophy department from 1967-74, except for four years when he was associate provost from 1970-74. He also was a visiting professor at the University of Hull in Great Britain and was instrumental in bringing the national offices of the American Philosophical Association to UD. He served as acting executive director and editor of the organization and later as a member of its board of officers. A co-founder of the Delaware Humanities Council, Dilley received its Award for Distinguished Service to the Humanities in 1979. He was a pioneer in distance learning at UD and received a Doctor of Humane Letters in 2000 from Walden University, where he served on the board of directors, for his contributions to distance learning.
